I have had a Compaq and have had numerous problems. It wouldn't turn on, would not load my Operating System, burned out pixels etc.

I live in Calgary, where is the best spot to buy a laptop (other than Compusmart) and what is the best laptop out there?

Who has the best warranty?

I have a $1500 (CDN) budget.

I have many opinions on this, but I'll try to keep it short. Dell is good because of it's on-site support (but if you don't pay and extra $300 you speak with people in India, and it can be maddening), but their spare parts are easily available due to that brand's popularity. The best in quality are Sony and Toshiba, but for support you have to mail off your laptop, unless you subject yourself to a Best Buy or CompUSA shop support plan (beware, this may or may not be a good choice).

For specs:

For XP, 512MB minimum (for XP. If you want to try Vista at some point double this), and try to get a mobile (pentium M, but core duo may work too) processor, as these will make the battery last longer. The video card is OK as long as you don't do anything real high-end, and try to get a 9-cell battery. Most laptops come with a 6-cell, and it won't last as long. All other specs depend on what you want to use the laptop for, but for everyday tasks the above works fine.

Keep in mind about the weight of the laptop, as some are really heavy and some are very light. The lighter usually the more expensive, and the larger the screen size it will likely make the laptop a bit heavier.

Hope this helps.

The lower your Hard drive and the good functions, the longer-lasting the battery!

HP is one of the best quality laptops ( i have 1 ) for performance. I had only one problem with it ever since i bought it (1 year ago) which is the button on left top corner for the screen got stuck inside lol. But that RARELY ever happens... I don't think that's an issue and can be fixed easily with a proper tool at home.

Sony VAIO is also one of the best laptops out there! but is expensive pricewise but works real good.

::::Those fancy laptops with feature to turn your screen around all the way around don't last much longer than 1 year... And does not have a very good graphics card either

Having windows XP Media Center Edition gives you the best features in your laptop and this windows is not sold seperately. Comes only pre-installed in a laptop due to some extra hardware features.

I recommend Sony VAIO or Hewlett-Packard. and every store has their own terms & conditions regarding the warranty but the manufacture warranty is for 12 months on both brands - HP & Sony.

Sort out all stores before you buy it. And plz buy one that has 10 number keybad built in the keyboard but seperated from alpha keys lol. Those with 10-key are usually 17" monitor or bigger. My laptop dosent have 10 keypad seperate and I wish i cared to look before buying lol.

Good Luck !!!

I suggest that you check out what is available on line and keep notes of the Model Numbers etc. A lot of people say that DELL is a good buy. Personally, I prefer to spend $2,500 for a SONY.

I don't know the best, but I can tell you what to NOT buy. Don't get an e-machine. They are garbage. Mine constantly over-heats and shuts itself down. There is currently a class-action law suit against them because they are so bad.
