My win98 ( i am still running it because I use an industrial software that won't run on newer OS) often goes to standby mode while I am away. But if I am away too long it will be dead then I have to reboot the whole system. What should I do with this problem?

This is a known issue with Windows 98. To resolve, go into desktop properties, Screensaver tab, the settings button under "energy saving features for your monitor". Under the Power Schemes tab, change the power scheme to always on, and make sure everything is set to never.

Go into the control panel under the power options and either increase the time before the computer hibernates (or turns off monitor, hard drive, etc. - may have to experiment a bit to see which is hanging it) or turn off the hibernation all together. It is very "buggy" on Win 98.

Not only Windows 98! My Windows 2000 Professional PC used to hang as yours, at that time, I cleaned up my PC and replaced new CMOS battery and it hasn't happened until now.
