You have Windows XP HOME eddition. This is a common problem I have seen. To fix it do a system restore. Go back 2 weeks and you should be fine. To do this go to Start>Programs>Accessories> System Tool> System Restore.

You will be working after that.

Go into the control panel and click on the System icon
Go to the Hardware tab
Click on the Device manger button
In the listing of hardware types that appears, look for the sound section
Click the little + in front of the sound sction to open the listing
Look for your sound card
Right Click on the card and select "uninstall"
Reboot the computer and it will readd the drivers for the card and hopefully you will have sound again

Also, have you check to be sure the volume(s) did not get turned down on the card?

There are viruses that can indirectly effect sound. A virus for example that deletes files that makes sound work is possible. Get rid of the virus and then reinstall sound drivers.

It sounds extra like the complicated-disk has failed- fairly in all probability given the age of the workstation. it really is probable uneconomic to interchange thechronic given the age of the workstation until eventually a buddy has an oldchronic (or workstation) they are keen to donate and setup for you. New laptops are very less costly at present, and many many circumstances extra effectual than something from the 90s.
