hCG is produced primarily in pregnancy. In rare circumstances, it can also be abnormally produced by germ cell tumors. However, for the most part, it is unique to pregnant women because it is produced as soon as the fertilized egg implants.

It can be detected as early as 6 days after implantation, before the first missed period.

hCG therapy is used in infertility as well, as part of an ovulation inducing regimen. It is usually begun within the first few days of the menstrual cycle and requires daily dosing for approximately eight to 10 days.
