Large Mouth Bass:

The largemouth is fundamentally a lake fish, and that is where it colonizes best. It is not a scavenger, it is strictly predaceous! It is not fussy about food. "If it moves, eat it!" is a kind of motto of the species.

Small Mouth Bass:

Shad and crayfish are consumed in lakes; and crayfish and minnows in streams. In streams, smallmouth can be very aggressive when hellgrammites and terrestrial insects are available.

Rainbow Trout:

Lake Trout:

Lake trout are a coldwater species found throughout Canada. Because this species does not tolerate warm water, lake trout from southerly populations are forced to retreat to the deep cold waters of the lake's hypolimnion during the summer months. Luckily for lake trout, many lakes contain species of pelagic prey fish like cisco that are found in deep waters, so lake trout can find food throughout the year. In lakes that do not contain any species of pelagic prey fish, lake trout are separated from the inshore fish by a thermal barrier, and are forced to subsist on zooplankton and invertebrates during the summer months. These invertebrate feeding lake trout grow more slowly and reproduce earlier than lake trout that are piscivorous year-round.

Just a couple examples for you, there are different species of trout and differrent species of Bass, and each species eats according to it's habitat and climate.

Flies, worms, other fish, just about anything they want when they are hungry. Color of bait does make a difference from lake to lake. What might be good at one lake might not be good at another. Best to use a bait with natural characteristics that match the animals that are in the particular body of water you are to fish. Check out the link below.
