Yes, but not because of everyone. I think some people could live in a world where everything was free, because they have ethics. They know right from wrong-- like people who return a stash of lost money, or if the ATM machine gives them extra.

However, the non-ethical people would kill it for everybody.

Nothing would ever get done if everything was free. People have to learn how to discipline themselves and work, to be a contributing member of society.

What would drive society if everything was free? Would you try and get a masters knowing that a high school dropout would be entitled to the same lifestyle you are working hard to get. It would be like an extreme form of communism where no one would strive to excel since that would not be possible.

I know some people that are living off the government. They do live chaotic lives trying to stay ahead to the system so that they don't lose the free ride. I would go as far as to say they work harder trying to stay on welfare, than they would if they just got a real job.

Absolutely!
It's what separates the honest and working from the leeches!
If everything was free, or on a barter system, it would be too easy for everyone to just take and not appreciate what they have earned.
You reap what you sow :-)

If everything was free I wonder how many people would become very stingy, grab up everything and open up their own store and sell to the rest? It would be too strange.

Yes, and then fighting would begin. People would join together and fight for more things. Battles would begin.

Eventually groups of people would cluster and begin bartering to get what they need. Eventually, a new method of money would begin.

Money is a necessary evil.

As is government.

No, we'd still have other rules and laws that apply, like you can't steal someone else's free stuff, etc.
