I get one of those every once in a while, sometimes so bad that I can't walk the next day. They usually happen in the middle of the night with me, hurt so much I start tearing. They are caused by dehydration and lack of salty foods. Make sure you drink plenty, especially now in the summer, and have a glass of water or something on your bedstand so when you get thirsty at night you don't have to get up. Just keep yourself hydrated and it should help.

Your body is deficient in Magnesium. Try supplementing with Mag Citrate or Amino Acid Chelate - 100 mg three times a day and for a week to see if it helps. It is safe, and as women, we lose magnesium through menstruation and do not make it within our own body. That's my best bet, you might be deficient in something else also, I'm not sure. Ask a qualified naturopath of any kind for instruction.

And just to let you guys know about potassium. Bananas are not the best sources. They are very acidic, and can cause build up. Soymilk is a good substitute for Cow milk and has all the calcium and potassium you need.

My wife had gotten this and she just had to give it time. The spasm was possibly due to circulation in the leg or bad posture while sleeping. If you point your feet in bed and sleep that way because of sheets, it will cause a spasm in the calf muscles.

If lack of potassium is not your problem perhaps it could be your sciatic nerve. Do you have a bad back? Ironically when I have this my back feels fine but my sciatic nerve is inflamed. If you eat bananas, potatoes and broccoli I doubt it is lack of potassium. If you are on water pills they do deplete your potassium. If you give more information I will try to answer more in depth. Regardless, you should check with a Dr. because it could be numerous things including phlebitis, (blood clot in vein) or poor circulation.

I get this mainly if I work out heavily and do not replenish body electrolytes like sodium and potassium. I have gone to using both a sodium and potassium salt when I cook during the summer or if I am working out heavy.

You need to get more potassium in your diet. A really fast cure for these spasms is to walk barefoot on a tile floor....I know it sounds crazy, but it really works. Give it try...good luck!

Are you pregnant?? I got them A LOT when I was pregnant!!! VERY PAINFUL!!! My Doctor told me to put my legs up...prop them on pillows and sleep like that. Or put blocks under the foot of your bed and sleep with your feet elevated that way! Also you could take some Tylenol or some other painkiller. Good luck!!!

I do, and potassium hasn't done the trick for me. I've found that it happens less frequently if I stretch out my calf muscles regularly.

You should make sure to get extra potassium, and calcium. It also might help to stretch more, especially after exercising to loosen up your leg muscles.

Could you possibly need potassium? You need to really talk to your doctor. I know my father thought he was having this and come to find out he had some other problems going on. Don't put it off, getting this checked out. It may or may not be serious, his was.
