Its English, but only because there are more countries that have English as their first or second language.......in pure numbers of people, its Chinese. But basically only one or two countries really speak it...its just that there are one heck of a lot of people in China..lol.
I think the answer your looking for is English, its used and understood in many more countries than any other language on the planet.

DD is right about Mandarin if you mean as a mother tongue. The most spoken foreign/mother tongue language is English.

Top internet language is English and number two is German.

I would say Mandarin Chinese for native indiginous speakers. Ni Hao, all. Mang ma?

But for sheer communications, I would have to propose mathematics as a wolrd language now, all our trans-global web is based on binary/machine codes and more complex languages... say C, C++, etc etc. based on math...Which sucks because I hate math. hehe.
