Nascar will never shut down. It's fan base is huge, it's interest by driver's, owner's, manufacturer's, and sponser's is waaaay to big.
It will only grow bigger and bigger. As the generation the grew up on it ages the numbers might shrink some, but you'll see a surge shortly therafter.

For one thing, they'll race Toyota Camrys next year and it's a growing sport. It will continue to get bigger. Nascar races are a lot of fun for fans. Whenever money is involved, the marketers try to do everything they can to keep something moving up the economical scale in their favor.

Overall it will get bigger, but it is already losing some of its long time fans. I think the Car of Tomorrow is a HORRIBLE idea.
I think that will be the beginning of the end of the "true" NASCAR fan. NASCAR is going to end up like IROC once they switch cars, they will all be identical.

I think it will get bigger, and bigger. I mean its the top ranked sport in America, and top competitor in leading sports in the world. Its watched in over 47 countries, and has 120+ million fans.

I think it will be shut down because we need the petroleum for more important things than just watching cars drive around and around and around.

They are getting interest stirred up in Japan, and they're also going to experiment with methanol as fuel, so it looks like they will expand.
