I believe that certain people are descended from monkeys, and others are not. Ask me sometime, and I'll point out which ones are which.
But as far as what people prefer to believe, people prefer to believe that which gives them more meaning in life or more comfort that they won't have to account for themselves. That is why people believe as they believe, evidence is insignificant compared to that.

If all one has is a cursory knowledge of evolution..... Many people seem to think that is what evolution implies. When Darwin's book was first published, an Archbishop publically mentioned the ape to human connection and was called to ask by Huxley, a great Darwin defender and supporter. Just continue to calmly explain evolution.

It's not just belief....There's scientific proof for the fact that human beings descended from apes, just as apes descended from animals even further back on the evolutionary scale. Now i know that's hardly enough to convert you, but if you have time, i would suggest that you read The Blind Watchmaker by Richard Dawkins. Even if you are opposed to evolution, it's a great read, very entertaining if you're even remotely curious. And it may just make you a convert. Highly recommended!!!

OK, Here we Go....
First of all Lets take this one step at a time. In Genesis the opening line is " In the Beginning God created the Heavens and The Earth, and the Earth was without form and void." Now when the Book of Genesis was first given in written form, It was given to Moses and he wrote it down. Now this part of the part of the bible was passed to him by oral tradition, and the word of God Himself in the Tabernacle as the Hebrews made their way across the desert in the 40 years it took them to make it from Egypt to the land of Canaan.
Now God was trying to Explain to Moses the most complicated subjects known to man. He was trying to explain billions of years of creation in only forty years to a man whose total life span was less than 100yrs. Now God could make it absolutely clear to moses exactly how all of this stuff worked, they could get on with the more important tasks of setting up The whole of mosaic law. So after The 5th time Moses said " Whats a Quark again"
and the 8th time he said " So if matter and energy are only created along the curvature of space/time, can I use it to get water from a rock?" And God said " Look, just forget what I just said, and write down the Highlights m'kay pumpkin?" So God tells Him Exactly how He did it all in the most basic form possible.
I could go into a LOT more detail than what I am going to get into (especially since this is turning into a book)
But It clearly states in other parts of the bible about the difference in the perception of time by Man and God. To God a thousand years is but a twinkling of an eye. So in General terms the 7 days of creation are like the 7 Stages of Creation. Each having a logical progression from one to another.
Now God Creates Man on Day Six. But doesn't Create Adam until Chapter 2. God doesn't describe the details of how he creates man, just that he does. But in Chapter 2 he goes into great detail. I think that Adam is the First Jew and Created separately from the Gentile man who was evolved and not the first choice of God, This fact comes in to play in that after they are kicked out of the Garden of Eden having abandoned their innocence. they had two sons. You may remember their story. After Cain kills Able he is sent to the land of Nod, and there he meets a wife. Now if Adam and Eve are the only people on the planet other than the murderous Cain then where does he find such a girl that is not his sister to marry?
You really can use the Bible to explain Science, and Science to explain the Bible if you really sit down to think about it and not automatically assume that everything the Preacher or the Teacher has to say on the subject is the only plausible truth. You can have faith and be rational as well. Just trust that God cannot lie but you can come the the wrong conclusion if you don't read things in context.

ok get this straight ancestors were not "monkeys" as such - but we did have a common ancestor - similar to if you look at dogs - Great Danes and Shih Tzus look nothing alike and yet BOTH had the same ancestor... its the same with primates - we all had the same ancestor - but took different paths in evolution..
of course there are some who beleive Aliens interbred with early primates to create humans.. but thats just one theory....

i'm still trying to figure out how the girl above me can say"I don't believe it but,I do believe we have a common ancestor".
Are all our schools in this country that bad that this girl doesn't understand that she admits in the same sentence that we are not but,we're still related?
Jesus, I don't believe our teachers deserve to make the money they make if they can't teach simple common sense,we really are behind the rest of the world.

The only reason that it is believable that humans evolved from primates is because not only is the physical appearence of this species simliar to humans but the DNA is also closely related. Food For Thought: When animals evolve.. THEY EVOLVE... there is no more left of that species....So if that's they case why are there still monkeys if we supposedly evovled from them.

I don't know some people believe Jesus died on the friday and rose on the Sunday. I guess if thats possible, then my ancestors could have been monkeys.

The more I delve into medicine, the more I realize it's impossible! We are far too complex to have evolved so quickly, and there is so much we still don't know about humans, AND monkeys.

The argument is not that people descended from monkeys, it is that people and other primates share a common ancestor.
