Famous presidents
There have been 43 presidents of the USA. Here are a few facts about some of the more famous ones.
President Washington
George Washington
President 1789-1797
He was the first president of the USA. He led the army in the American War of Independence.
He helped write the constitution, which outlines the laws and rights for US citizens.
He also decided the US Government offices should be in an area "not exceeding ten miles square... on the river Potomac," where they still are today, in Washington DC.
President Lincoln
Abraham Lincoln
President 1861-65
He led the North in the American Civil War against the South, who wanted to break away from the United States.
He also came up with the Emancipation Proclamation, which gave all slaves in the US their freedom.
He was assassinated in 1865 by John Wilkes Booth, who was a supporter of the South.
Franklin D. Roosevelt
President 1933-45
He ruled the US in the difficult years following the Great Depression, which put millions of people out of work, and during World War Two.
His "New Deal" saw lots of building projects to give people work, and he helped come up with the United Nations to try to prevent any more big wars.
President Kennedy
John F. Kennedy
President 1961-63
Kennedy was the youngest man to become President, and was also the first Catholic to have the job.
He kick-started the programme that saw Neil Armstrong land on the Moon in 1969.
But he is most famous for being assassinated in Dallas, Texas, in 1963. There are still lots of theories about who was really behind it.
