i loved frailty as well - it's just so creepy.

you might want to check out session 9, mulholland drive (i'm warning you though this one is quite strange and weird,) or the machinist.

session 9 is about this group of men cleaning up an old insane asylum. mulholland drive is pretty odd, it's almost a comment on hollywood and how life there isn't always so glamorous. the machinist has to be my favorite of these though - it's smart, intriguing, has loads of symbolism, and christen bale has a tremendous performance in the movie. hope this helps!

"Don't Look Now" with Donald Sutherland. I saw it in the early 70's, when I read your question, that was the 1st thing I thought of. I really liked Mothman, I was a teenager when the movie I mentioned came out, but....I have a "sneakin' suspicion" that you would like the afore described movie.

"Alien" by Ridley Scott. Gore is minimal (compared to today's fare) and the sets, design, and creature concept is fantastic. I've likened it to Hitchcock for building suspense and fear. Even today it still makes me freaked.
