I grew up in St.Pete, and I definitely remember them. They were large and red with huge heads, hence "Bull". And, they do bite hard. I do not know if they go by any other name, but that's what we called them.
Call the exterminator to treat the problem, and try to capture a few in a ziploc to examine them closer. Thi also gives the exterminator a better idea of what he/she is dealing with.

I am also in Central FL, and I am assuming you are talking about those big red and black ants. We call those carpenter ants here. Thier main source of food is rotting wood. They will also eat fire ants. They are a very beneficial addition to the yard, as they beat the termites to the feast... but if they annoy you, Lowes sells a product to get rid of them.

They are big red ants that can give a very nasty sting. Andro ant killer works well.
