I personally do not enjoy nascar. I still, however, respect the skill and effort that goes into each race. Driving a car is easy. Driving a car well is somewhat harder. Driving a car at 200 mph with 40 odd others trying cut in front of you is just plain crazy. That said, Formula 1 is much better, as the technology on the cars is mind blowing, and the drivers turn right and left.
And, as a sidenote, Formula 1 is the most popular sports series in the world, and soccer is the most popular sport in the world. It's all opinion. One's opinion is worth no more than anyone else's. Unless one thinks it is.

Most sports have an element of stupidity to them if you really analyze it. Hitting a ball with a stick. Throwing an egg shaped ball and then knocking the crap out of each other to get it. Kicking a ball along the ground and occasionally hitting it with your head. Bouncing a ball and throwing it it through a hoop. None of this is exactly rocket science in the greater scheme of things. To each his/her own.
Driving for NASCAR, Indy or F1 is the ground version of being a jet fighter pilot. To be good and win, you have to constantly push the edge. During every corner the cars are just drifting on the edge of losing traction. For 3-4 hours, there is no let up in the tension, except during yellow flags. When you lose the edge, it's time to quit because you end up being racings version of the person doing 50 mph in the fast lane. It's dangerous.
Consider the stress of fighting rush hour traffic with everyone weaving in and out and then imagine doing that at 200 mph. Not many people can handle it. Racing in any form is a feat of endurance.

I agree with the person who started this question...To most circuit racing fans (i.e, Formula One, World Touring Car championships, the different Formula 3 series around the world, touring car championships) and rally racing fans, NASCAR is a boring sport. All you do is go around and around, all with left turns, all on danerously banked ovals.
Just ask any European, African, Latin American, or Asian racing fan,and there are a lot here in the Philippines...They don't like NASCAR for the aforementioned above reasons...A true test of a car is not just the engine, but the suspension, the wheels, the tires, the brakes, the transmission, the aerodynamic setup, etc.
NASCAR is just a highlighted engine display. That can't be seen in an oval, but in a true race circuit (like Monaco or Spa Francorchamps) or rally course.
I actually have more respect for (current F1 Scuderia Toro Rosso) US driver Scott Speed than any of the NASCAR drivers...Besides, even Madonna said she dislikes NASCAR drivers; according to her in a 1994-1995 interview, she said that all NASCAR drivers talk about tobacco sponsorships and their NASCAR experience.
Also, NASCAR is not sanctioned by the FIA. Any FIA-sanctioned sport rules!
NASCAR is one of those things that shows why the US doesn't excel in any sport; it just tries to twist the rules and bends it to its free will...Just like its president...

It's difficult to build an engine that will run at over 200 mph for 300-500 miles. Driving a car @ 200 mph for that long is not easy either. I agree it wastes fossil fuels though. The UK doesn't have a version of Nascar? It is amazing how many people attend each event & how much money is spent on the cars & crews. The crews are considered professional athletes.

i'm not even going to really address YOUR rantings, the article in your link says it all, it was very well written. NASCAR haters like you are a dime a dozen. NASCAR is the second most strategic sport in america behind football, so if you're too dumb to get it, fine, no one is begging you to watch. what i want to address is the idiot who says F1 drivers are better than NASCAR drivers. what a joke. in F1, it's all about the car. with that sissy traction control, these million dollar cars basically drive themselves, they require very little skill from the driver. NASCAR drivers have to fight with low tech, ill handling cars which puts the race in the hands of the driver, the way racing is supposed to be. in F1, there is very little passing and a gap of several seconds between each car the entire race. BORING!!! in NASCAR, the drivers beat and bang and acually PASS each other at 190MPH plus. the overrated F1 drivers would not be able to handle such close, physical racing

Mmmm, interesting. First, let me start by saying if Nascar is stupid.. than by damn slap me with the stupid branch, b/c I want to be stupid so that I can bank on those kind of numbers of revenue..
Second, I have to laugh at all of you haters who constantly try to put down a sport like it has such a big impact.. Riight. You're measly little grumpy opinion is going to hurt the sport so much. HAHA NOT!!
Third, one must ponder how little of a life others have to focus so much of their energy on something they dislike. Personally, I hate idiots and therefor, do not spend a good portion of my time around them. It's a pretty plain and simple theory. If you don't like it..don't watch it. That's the beatiful thing that this country built.. Freedom, which also gives us the Freedom to enjoy it and watch it.
Now, I'm sure that many of you ney-sayers to the ovals love to get our fans goat..but I got news for ya.. I can go along my merrily way watching my sport, and loving it with or without you blessing..so hate away if that's what puts a smile on your face, but in the long run.. I feel that you will have a very long and unfufilling life in which you focus on things you dislike... (Whew, that could be a tumultious marriage..)
--edit--- definite props to Dale P on the analogy of stupidity in all sports, b/c yeah, hello, there are some, LOL. I love football but have no desire to throw myself on some astrotur and have a bunch of 200-300lbs men jump on me.. OUCH. No desire to get myself slammed up against a wall while on skates after chucking a puck across the ice.. YIKES!! It doens't mean I don't enjoy watching them, and it's a proven fact Americans love destruction and violence so these sports breed to the extreme. Can we talk curling for asecond?? I don't enjoy sweeping my floors in my house.. why am I going to freeze my **** off on an ice rink to do it??

Jeez...can't you accept that some people love NASCAR...and just change the channel or go read some book or something if NASCAR racing is on TV and someone else in your house is watching? Why beat a dead horse? There's no way that you can stop NASCAR fans from loving the sport. Give it up, you can't always have it your way. if you don't like it,you don't have to watch it!
By the way....Formula One, YES I've watched it...boring as h*ll, single file, no going three or four-wide and racing against other drivers on your own team(those dumb team orders)....
And I bet some of you don't like NASCAR because it's not full of bling-wearing, Escalade-driving, gangsta-rap loving, cash money THUGS like some of the NBA and NFL players you worship...You're just as much 'in love' with those guys as we NASCAR fans love our sport and our drivers, who rarely get into legal trouble UNLIKE SOME OF THOSE IN MLB, the NBA, and the NFL...hey, don't insult us and our sport and not expect someone to speak their mind about your sports.

My Husband adores nascar, and being a sweet wife, I sit through some races with him, and try to just enjoy this time together, but I've never been able to get excited about the "sport". I'll always been a Football fan tho!!!

I don't even consider it a sport, it doesn't test you, if you can drive then your practically able to do Nascar. I'll never see what people see in that race.
It's gotta be the most boring thing you can watch.
