get a swr meter and a jumper cable and a allen wrench.hook up the swr meter to the radio and loosen the screw on the antenna and put it on channel 1 and key the mike and see what it reads on the meter, try to get it down to about 1.5 on the meter, then go to channel 20 and see where it reads then go to 40 and see where it reads at try to get all channels below 2.0(you can talk on2.0)but it is better if you can get it as low as possible.i had a cb since 1977.i got a 40 ch.uniden with a k-40 antenna and it will talk about anywhere i want .just do as i say and you will too.if you want to you can e-mail me if you got a problem.oh by the way to adjust the swr just you raise the stinger or lower it till you get the lowest reading on your meter.good luck and i hope i can be some help to another cber.
