I sent a letter out, dropped it in the box on the corner. And the mail man picked it up thursday. I'm in connecticut and I'm sending it to Virginia, when do you think it will get to Virginia? Saturday?
Also, exactly how do things just get 'lost' in the mail? I mean we can the address neatly, put the postage on straight, drop it into the box 'correctly', and take all these precautions. But, why is there still a risk? I mean isn't it a system? I imagine that they take it out of the box, put it in a pile, send it to teh post office to be sorted, and it gets sent out again.

First your letter is taken to the local post office and then it is processed and sent to a regional office. Then it is placed aboard an aircraft along with other pieces of mail and flown to a transport hub where it is then transfered to another aircraft and then sent to the regional office within the arrival area and then sent to the local office where it is distributed to the local carrier and arrives to its destination.

Probably Saturday, Monday at the latest.

Things get lost because, well, stuff happens. Maybe it falls behind a machine or something. There have been cases where carriers, for whatever reason, have hidden large quantities of mail at home or someplace. A "system" might reduce the chance of these things happening but isn't going to eliminate them.

Have you never heard any news stories where the mailman had gotten tired or whatever and just packed his house with everyones mail. And they didn't find out for at least a year. I've seen at least two or three of these stories. None recent though. And then there are those crack heads who steal mail in the chance there's checks or other finances in there. Hope it gets found.

As far as I know, I think I've had maybe two items get lost in the mail in my whole life. Not a bad system.

The mail takes as long as the level of expertise of those handling it which happen to be humans. The system works if all do their job well.
