The abbreviation for alumni is probably alumn. (although Alumn is singular for alumni)

As for history, I am not sure. If you are referring to college and university alumni... universities trace their histories way back to the Middle Ages in Europe.

The first alumni were probably from the University of Paris (France) or University of Bologna (Italy).

Alumni is Latin...it is the "female" counterpart to alumnus...Translation is "foster child" or "pupil"...Goes hand in hand with Alma mater (literal translation is "nourishing mother" but refers to the school/college that you attended).
