I am a ceramist. Porcelain clay is hardened and made permanent by firing in a kiln at temperatures of between about 1200 degrees Celsius and about 1400 degrees Celsius. The toughness, strength and translucence of porcelain arises mainly from the formation at high temperatures within the clay body of the mineral mullite and GLASS.

The side and rear car windows are made of tempered glass. The glass is heated (at lower temperatures than required to make porcelain), then rapidly cooled. This "tempering" process makes the glass many times stronger than un-tempered glass of the same thickness. Upon impact, tempered glass is designed to disintegrate into small pieces of glass about the size of rock salt.

Since porcelain is heated at a higher temperature than auto glass, the harder porcelain will easily break auto glass.
