England always join the World Cup as a state rather than under the umbrella of United Kingdom together with Scotland and Wales. Why? Other nations join the World Cup as countries instead of England.

Because out of those countries England is the only one known to play soccer and to have a passion for it.

The original reason is because The Football Association, which was founded in 1863 and which is the first ever soccer association in the world, only included English clubs. Soccer was originally an English sport only.

So the clubs of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland had to form three separate associations later. The Scottish Football Association was founded in 1873, the Football Association of Wales in 1876, and the Irish Football Association of what is nowadays Northern Ireland in 1880.

By the way, I already answered the following before when a somewhat similar question was asked ("Why in the FIFA world cup we see the flag of the England and not of the GreatBretain ? What is the difference?"):

"First of all, you have to differ between the United Kingdom and Great Britain. Nowadays, the United Kingdom is composed of Great Britain plus Northern Ireland. Great Britain itself is composed of England, Scotland and Wales. The country represented at the United Nations is the United Kingdom as a whole, not just Great Britain.

The football players play in separate teams because this is sports and not politics. In association football, England has a separate team from that of Scotland and that of Wales. This is why you see the flag of England when there's a football game and the flags of Scotland and Wales when those two other teams play.

By the way, their football clubs also play in separate leagues."

England, Scotland and Wales are all separate countries. They would have all entered qualifying, but only England made it into the tournament.

Rubbish, I don't think its strictly up to England. I don't think Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland are all that excited about coming together either.
