Winpatrol is a intrusion detection software (IDS). Winpatrol monitors key areas of your PC, area which are commonly exploited by hackers. It monitors the startup programs, Hosts file, Windows processes, Browser Help Objects (BHO), IE homepage and default search page, cookies...etc. While anti-spyware and antivirus are good at removing malicious files, Winpatrol prevents them from installing in the first place. For example, a spyware tries to change IE's homepage, Winpatrol alerts you to the attempt and asks you if you want to change it. If you answer "no" then it stops the process. Even if the spyware was successful in changing the homepage, it would only be temporary because Winpatrol easily changes back to the orginial homepage. No changes can be made to these sensitive areas without Winpatrol detecting it and prompting the users to block or allow the change. It is one more layer of protection. You will still need a firewall, antivirus and anti-spyware but Winpatrol will greatly harden your PC's security
