hiya lester...
just as gasoline (octane, septane and all the other "...tane" solvents), benzene, xylene and toluene are clean, clear solvents distilled from crude oil...so is mineral spirits. "mineral spirits" is typically the slowest drying of petroleum distillates and is used commercially in the manufacture of many, many products... it is usually sold to the consumer for the purpose of thinning, or cleaning up from using oil based paints.
most of the mineral spirits available to consumers today are considered "100% pure" or "odorless" as this describes a cleaner version of paint thinners (products labeled as such are distilled spirits that have been engineered to remove any residual crude plus traces of toluene, benzene and other "...enes" so as to provide a better performing, environmentally cleaner and safer-to-use solvent)
spraying thinner...or spraying mineral spirits...fast drying thinner (or spirits) are some common names for "naptha" or "v.m.&p. naptha"...another type of petroleum distillate that can usually be used in place of odorless mineral spirits if faster drying of finish product is desired. naptha, or benzine (not to be confused with benzene) differs from mineral spirits as the traces of toluene, benzene and xylene have not been completely removed and the product is of slightly greater strength, dries much faster and is considerably more "aromatic" than odorless.
i hope this answers your question...best wishes
