All hard drive manufacturers offer a free utility to do what you are trying to do. Download Western Digitals "Data Lifeguard 11" from their website. It is free, very easy to use and works perfectly on any brand of drive. Just install the drive, start data lifeguard and copy the drive. If you want the drive to be your new boot drive, check Format drive as boot disk when prompted and your good.

If you're looking to create an exact replica of the image on your present drive, use Norton Ghost. This product has been around for years and I have used it for fortune 500 clients.

Mount the new drive in as a second drive and then do a full image transfer of the old drive. Symantec Ghost is a good program for that.

Then mount the new drive as the primary one. After Booting up and making sure everything works, you can later put the old drive in as a second drive, wipe it clean and use it as backup storage.

This one has been around for a long time and is probably the most used, plus it's very reliable.

Aloha bob:
(Some new computers actually have an option to have this pre-installed, to make the transfer less painful

Dell seems to have the lowest price for it:

(If you're not adverse to buying it used, I just found it on Amazon for $50.)
