I think the dream factory has run out of dreams to a certain extent. Sure, occasionally ground-breaking movies are made like The Matrix but generally speaking it's hard to come up with new ideas when so many ideas have already been tried. Then it's tempting to do a remake, to get the buzz started and to cash in on a past success.
By the way, I liked the new "The Italian Job". Solid suspense in my book. When it comes to King Kong... to darn long. A General rule: keep it under 2 hours with very few exceptions.

Because Hollywood peaked for ideas years ago and feels it is necessary to butcher classics in order to keep the money flowing (sadly, they're "ingenius" idea has proven faulty). As someone mentioned before about banking on past big hits, some remakes HAVE been successful, but for the most part, I think Hollywood is just trying to cover itself until someone in the industry actually throws out new ideas and they prove to be successful.
It's a sad, sad world in the film industry. :(

simply because the movies that they are re-doing are classics. and everyone loves them. it's another way of making a lot of money. they show you good clips of the remake in the trailer (and that's about the best part of the new film) and they expect you to immediately bite at that and watch it. money.
or you can look at it this way, maybe they thought that because the technology today is nothing compared to the era in which the original movie was made, they felt that they could improve the quality of the movie just by adding complicated but i admit, great special effects to mask the lack of originality.

I think it's beacuse right now there is a strong market for well known fanatasy flicks. By well know I mean movies based on books or old tv shows and stuff. Everyone wants to cash in on that by remaking a well known movie that young people will definitely watch and mabe a few older folks as well

the same thing happened with Poseidon the remake of The Poseidon Adventure... I was actually hoping the ship would sink faster and drown the bloody lot of them so I could get the hell out of it, so I could go and have dinner and sit and have scintillating conversation with this beautiful woman I took to see it... it was her choice not mine...I actually prefered the original with Gene Hackman, Enerst Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Roddy McDowell... ahh the classics... can't wait for the remake of Towering Inferno and all the airport movies... Yawnnn...

I think it was because the original stars had that certain magic about them that you do not get now. But the box office makes money as people still go to see them.

They're running out of ideas....and, most of the time, its a secure move, financially. If it was a hit the first time, it'll probably be big the second time around, although this doesn't always prove to be true...
