The nations, countries and states of the world could unite on the basis of common ideals.
We could put together a list of common social problems. Once the social problems are agreed upon the next thing is how to mitigate and possible solve these social problems.
Ideally solving any and all social problems of the world begins with Godly virtues.

The Seti Institute is looking for signals from another world. If found, they will probably reveal a society of beings that are as similar to us as we are to cabbage. Such a revelation would probably point out the differences between peoples is so trivial that we would feel much more alike.
Unfortunately it usually takes a threat to unite unrealted peoples, so a disaster such as global warming, a meteor strike, a mega erruption, or maybe hostile overtures from extra-terrestials would have that effect. It would be nice if it could come from the goodness of our hearts.

Sadly,I cant see them uniting on anything....at least, not very soon:
.Global warming...the U.S officially doesn't think it's a threat.
.Iran and North Korea...the rest of the world doesn't think they are threats.
.Fighting global poverty....when you mention Mozambique people in the U.S say " Mozam....what?!"
.Fighting global disease...some people would ratherbomb U.S citizens, while the U.S would do all it can to prevent the disease from coming in.
. The war on terror...okay, the U.S has convinced the rest of the world that there is a threat, but they disagree on causes and modalities.
.Okay football...the U.S doesn't think "soccer"' is that big of a deal....The Indonesians are (sadly)grappling with a wave of natural disasters...The Chinese prefer ping pong,...and the Indians...they'd rather play cricket! That's more than half the population of humanity we're talking about....while the rest get united on the pitches in most of Germany!
So you see....it's hard to agree...!

I'd say a massive natural or extraterrestrial event that would halt the infighting and instill a massive co-op. Global warming would be a good start. But if you want immediate results. Yellowstone Caldera eruption, Intergalactic Invasion would do the trick.

Common=the other gender-openly & welcomed...acceptance of interracial relationships from us all would be the biggest step.....
It would be a giant step if most/all of us(the whole world)would welcome & accept other cultures...and want to learn more of others without prejudice & racism...
Every other topic(religion,politics,
special interests, etc)takes a backseat to the above...believe it or not.

That we're all human beings and there's only one world available for everyone.
But BEING "human" dictates that that would never happen.
