Well, if you have a router, just plug both into the router run the network setup wizard on the computer. It can be found in the control panel under network connections. If they are wireless, the same thing, just click setup my wireless connection. Also try using a crossover cable, almost the same as a high speed internet cable, except it allows you to connect two pcs or objects together and transfer data between the two. But the network setup wizards are great and they break it down in simple terms.

Doesn't matter if you have a laptop, desktop or whatever top - they are still computers!
Just go buy a Cross-over Ethernet cable. Your laptop should have a built in RJ45 plug at the back. Your desktop will properly need a Ethernet card to be installed. They cost only like US$10.

Buy a crossover network cable and connect them by network port/card.
You should be able to see either computer under 'View workgroup computers' in Network Places if they are in the same group. You can tell that by right-clicking My Computer (on the desktop or in the start menu) going to Properties and looking under the Computer Name tab.

Forgive me to assume you are in the US. Run to Walmart and pick up a Lynksys NR041 router. It is base and straight forward. Hook it to atleast one computer and run the setup disk. When configured you only have to add computers. You will need an ethernet cable per computer. The ethernet cable from you DSL or cable modem will connect to the router.
NOTE: When purchasing Ethernet cables do not buy crossover. It will not work with a LAN.

simplest way is to buy a ethernet cable and connect them directly. However, if you want to connect them to the internet as well, you will need some sort of router, whether it be a wireless or common is up to you. Afterwords, just follow the instructions of the operating system and hardware you are using and you should be set.
