The universe is everything within the boundaries of your perception. If you're an astrophysicist, then the universe is huge. If you're a 9-month old baby, then the universe is your house. If you're spouse is slowly dying of cancer, then it's your spouse. It's all a matter of perspective.

As i best understand it a universe is a portion of the cosmos that we can "see" with any of the known frequencies. It pertains to the vacant space as well as space that is occupied by mass.
