Legal separation is an alternative to divorce. Often times when couples are contemplating a divorce but aren't 100% sure that divorce is the answer they file for a legal separation. A legal separation is a legally binding agreement between a husband and wife to separate for a period of time in order to give one another space and time to see whether or not their differences can be resolved. Although it gives the couple permission to live apart from one another it does not give them permisson to commit adultery or pursue outside relationships. Both parties are still held to their marriage vows. Financial responsiblities and other obligations are usually negotiated. For more information on legal separations you can check your local library, the internet or call your local attorneys office. Good luck.
