You could start out by writing down five things each day that made you happy. They call that a gratitude journal. The structure of doing that might break your writer's block.
Here are some websites to give you more ideas for writing:
http://www.journal-writing.webdjinni.net/getting-started/index.html
http://www.journalingtools.com/
There are lots of books on this topic (go to Amazon and put in journaling or diary) and even a magazine:
http://www.writersdigest.com/journaling/
Check the public library for some of these.
Probably the best thing to do is not to want it to be perfect. Just write something. It doesn't have to be profound. Just start. Pretend you are writing an email about your day to your best friend. Just let it flow.

i have a journal called "the book of me" and on the first page it asks general questions for every day. The weather, what time it is, news with friends and family, things to do to make tomorrow better, the best part of today, news in the world. It helps when I am writing those things to jog my memory of what I actually want in the journal on the next page. That, and I write it almost like a letter to a friend I have not seen in a while.
Good luck, I have a hard time with it, too.

hey. good job starting a journal. it really helps me clear my head.
some tips:
i don't really try to make anything i write sould "good" i just write about what has happened that day, what i'm thinking, about people, about WHATEVER you need to write about. sometimes i doodle, paste papers and pictures in my journal too.
writing down problems or issues you've had that day really helps with them, you have somewhere to get them out, and while you're writing, it also helps you see them in a new perspective. another fun thing is to listen to music when you write.
try to pick some music that matches how you feel at the moment you choose to write.
something to motivate you to write is this: if you want to remember something that has happened to you (good or bad) you should write it down in detail, so you CAN remember it years from now.
a journal is a great object of self-growth. it helps you to look inside your own mind in a way you wouldn't normally. sometimes when you start writing, you might be surprised what comes out. some secret feelings, something you've been afraid of admitting. it helps a lot.
i hope some of this babble is useful.

Just write about how ur day went and what you did. I have a calender and for everyday I write what I did.
You could also put your feelings or about your friends or poems. I use my journal for many things. Once in a while I will write about how old I am and what I have been doing and what is going on on my life. There are many thing to use it for. Have fun.

Subscribe to this online service and they will give you writing prompts once a week.
I have a book I bought called "The Writer's Book of Matches". Here are five prompts from it to get you started:
1. "I'm never doing that again."
2. During her first trip to Las Vegas, a woman experiences the luckiest night of her life.
3. "There are several possible answers to that question."
4. You just discovered that your friend has a very unusual, very dangerous hobby.
5. "She was my last chance."
These are fictional writing prompts. There are all kinds of writing groups you can join. Just write about your day, what your feeling, what your kids did (if you have any). Just write...

Do you blog? If you do then use that. I sometimes write about stupid stuff in my journal. Like what I could be doing, or what I should be doing at that very moment. If that doesn't work than write poetry. You can even writ about stupid stuff. From socks, to shoes, to people, to cars, to trucks, to music, to anime, to games, to feels and emotions...to...*sighs*...just about anything your heart desires to write about.
