Was it from a movie? I've heard it for a long time but never knew where it originated.

Yes, I understand the anology: how laxatives create smooth bowel movements and then saying "smooth move ex-lax" would be appropriate if someone had messed something up (not being "smooth" but rather inept).
Thanks everyone for answering! I'm sorry I wasn't being the clearest with what I was asking.

I've searched and searched, and can't find anything! The best (and most recurrent anwer) was "as the kids used to say in school...". So maybe it's just something that came about on the playground and spread like fire.

It is slang taken from an advertisement for Ex-Lax. In case you don't already know, Ex-Lax is a product that relieves constipation and "promotes smooth (bowel) movements." People, in their never-ending quest to find ways of making fun of things (love that sense of humor) made up the saying - which, by the way, is not meant as a compliment, but means "boy, that was a shitty move on your part."

maybe it came from someone running into someone else holding a beer at a sports arena, and his beer spills all over him and other people around him, while you are trying to run to the toilet. and the guy hollered "smooth move ex-lax" after all he probably paid 5 dollars for the beer.
i don't know myself, but that is what happens when the ex-lax works, it becomes a smooth move.
