Some people believe it is an unconscious sign of trying to pull the answer they are searching for from their lips, as in coaxing the answer out of their minds by pulling the words out of their mouths.

People will put there hand on there face or the side of their head or on top of their head or may other places or even tug on their lower lip when thinking hard. They do this because this brings you closer inside your own self. It helps you to block out the outside world so you and be one on one in side your mind and a little closer within yourself. It is hard to explain so everyone can usnderstand but just lean over your desk and put your forehead on your hand looking deep into the wood grain not really looking at anything and think aobut it for a minute. you will get it.

Nervous habit. My brother used to rub his head when he was thinking about something really hard. Its funny.
