Girls in the US enjoy soccer because they enjoy the game - not just because of the World Cup. Team sports in the US for women are somewhat limited. They tried pro-basketball but it really didn't go well (darn it). Girls in jr. high and high school also seem to play a lot of either volleyball or basketball, but soccer is quickly gaining popularity - more with the gals than the guys. At our local university the women's soccer team is as competitive as the men's; however, once out of college that will be it for most of them. Sad...

Girls here are definitely interested in the world cup for the same reason that people all over the world are: it showcases the champions of an awesome sport.

For me, personally, I have been playing soccer since I was 5, and have followed the world cup since I was old enough to turn on the TV.

Actually, I'm from Italy and this has been my 2nd world cup in the USA. I'm glad that ESPN is broadcasting all the games this year. I hope that Americans (guys and girls) get more into soccer because it's the only sport I care to watch ;-) (along with a little hockey). But I understand them not getting into it because I can't get into American football or baseball either... I think it's a cultural factor.

Soccer is still the same in America. It has not changed even with America winning the Women's World Cup 1999. American Football and Baseball are king here. It will not change these sports have been engained into the American Cultere. So my answer is there has been no change here in soccer's popularity. It is still a niche sport here nothing more.

We have women's soccer teams that are really great, with female soccer players like Mia Hamm, but most of us girls aren't as interested in sports as men. Some are, but most aren't. Not only that, but soccer isn't a key sport in this country for many people - we're more into baseball and American football.

I've enjoyed soccer since I was a kid.

Though this is the first time I follow the world cup religiously.

I personally can't stand American sports (i.e. Basketball, Baseball,Hockey, etc), so it's pretty exciting too have soccer everywhere all the time now.

i love soccer (football, watever u wanna say). i played on my high school team. but i HATE american football, its a rediculous game. rugby, now there's a good game. but ya i know what u mean, americans getting into it may have something to do with the fact that espn has nothing interesting besides the world cup to show. i wish more americans would get into soccer, and i really wish the american national soccer team would get BETTER!!!!
