I wouldn't spend more than $300. You don't want a very cheap instrument as they're too hard to play and she may get discouraged. You also don't want to spend too much because she doesn't yet have the skills and knowledge to know the difference. As a golfing buddy once said when I was first learning to play golf, "For the first few years it'll feel like you're hitting rocks. Don't spend alot on a set." Don't forget you'll need to buy an amplifier and a strap, too.
Your best bet when shopping is to take along a musician friend and have them play the instruments at a music store. In the absence of a musician friend, hang out at the bass department of of a store for 30 mins or so and ask someone to help you, preferably not a store employee but a customer. I've done this for a few parents shopping for their kids and it seemed to work well. The kids will respect this person's opinion more than yours and can be dissuaded from an inferior instrument just because of color, etc...
Good luck!

I'm a fourteen year old girl and I play bass guitar. :D It takes practice. Just like any other instrument. The more you play, the better you will be. I have been playing for about 3 or 4 years now, and I can tell that over the years I have been playing that I have gotten increasingly better.

check out this site, http://musiciansfriend.com go under the bass section and find one not over $400 if she's just starting as it won't be a bad instrument, but if she decides to quit, you won't be set back a real LARGE amount. for someone starting, I'd recommend the fenders, the P bass will probably be the most "user friendly" if you will.. and ibanez also has some decent basses. but whatever you decide, be sure to read the reviews.
good luck to your daughter, and never let her give up!

Buy a medium sized USED bass. Then if it feels OK you/she can always move up to a fuller sized Fender or whatever Brand tickles you. Lots of good makes available out there. You don't have to spend a lot of $$$$. Go to a local music store and get a hands on demo.

I like Ibanez basses myself. I would highly recommend getting a used bass no what brand you get. If she is no good or loses interest you can probably sell a used bass for a price similar to what you paid for it. New instruments, like cars, go down in value as soon as you take them home.

Go with a Fender Squire - they're pretty small and a good instrument.
