I work in broadcasting, specifically news and audio production. I'm thinking that reading books on tape might be a good career move, or possibly a sideline.

I've recently looked into this myself. I am an actor with some vocal training. I live in Canada so I naturally contacted the CNIB (Canadian National Institute for the Blind). Wherever you live there should be an institute for the blind. Try there first. I know the Canadian Institute seeks volunteers to transfer books to tape. I'll be doing my audition soon, hope it goes well.

I know several people that read for the CNIB here in Canada. They don't get paid but perhaps it would give you something to put on your resume. Try contacting a publisher that does books on tape and ask for an "information interview" - a chance to speak to someone without going after them for a job at this time. Most people are flattered and happy to meet you for coffee or a lunch (you pay, of course!) People do love to talk about themselves. Good luck!

Yeah, a good place to start is definitely an organization for the blind. I know in Houston and in Dallas there is a place called Lighthouse for the Blind. You can volunteer to read books and magazines on tape for them.

You could check with organizations for the blind.Many provide books on tape to the blind and to those with learning disabilities.
