It was a combination of a lot of subtle actions which, combined, had the effect of ultimately deciding things in Germany's favor.

First, give credit to the Germans where credit is due. Germany was relentless and didn't crumble when going down by one goal for the first time in the tournament. Second, Lehmann may have appeared to be a bit shaky during the game, but very correctly anticipated Argentina's kicks during penalty shots.

Second, acknowledge Argentina's bad luck and faults where these existed. Abbondanzieri's injury was crippling. Pekermann had to waste a substitution on the goalie's position, which in a game as close as this, is huge. Second, Pekermann called for a defensive game after their goal, giving up possession of the ball to Germany for the last 40 minutes of the game. He paid for that mistake dearly. Finally, Pekerman screwed up by putting in an unknown Ruiz (?) instead of Messi. An attack-minded 3rd substitution (like Messi) would have kept the ball away from Germany merely by orchestrating some attacks and breaking up Germany's relentless attack. With a Messi with fresh legs, inspiring on a Tevez to run up the throat of Germany,... who knows? Another goal? Maybe not, but they might have preserved their lead to the end.

Finally, the ref. While he was not horrible, any close call went in favor of the Germans. An Argentine dive? "Yellow," he calls firmly. A German half gainer with a twist? "Play on," he wispers dubitatively.

If Argentina could not beat Germany, they will win the cup on July 9. Incidentally, that is Argentina's independence day. If only Argentina were playing that day....

Because Germany had 12 players in the field (the actual 11 plus the referee).

Argentina lost the game due to the penalty kicks ..
How can they play without Messo ?
Argentina need a superb goal keeper .. This is their weak point for not able to save the goal

They could not get the ball in the goal for 90 minutes plus overtime and then did not outscore Germany during the penalty kick phase of the game

argentina is my favorite team. they lost because of bad mistakes that the coach, peckerman, made. they definitely did not lose because germany is better. argentina played much better than germany but peckerman lost it for the team.

I'm really much agree with Kempes Klub and I would like to add a little extra, but very important change in the game .

- Minute 70 : CAMBIASSO in for RIQUELME . After that change, Germany took over the Midfield . I know Riquelme was a little tired, but he's the only one that can help keep the ball in the midfield , also he's so great in set-piece .

- Minute 80 : Cruz in for Crespo . Please please please , they should have brought in the great young Messi . Messi would have out dribble and out run all German's players with his skills and fresh legs ... I can go on and on .

i think arg were not agrresive enough from the start.they hav such high quality players n still they didnt use them.after the 1st goal they played more negatively n paid the price.i think pekermen is to be blamed for not using the team's talent.
Not playing Messi enough is the biggest mistake he has made.
Messi will emerge as a player n he will be THE player to watch in the next world cup

I liked Germany to win the game. But I felt sorry for Argentina. They played nicely.
Maybe they were not as powerful as Germany in penalty.
And one of the other reasons was that they changed their goalkeeper.
