usually the difference is in the level of professionalism. a security officer is usually sworn in just like a police officer and has the power to arrest someone violating the state laws on the property he/she is working. most professional officers are usually certified and qualified to carry a firearm if needed. when i was active duty military i used to work part time as a security officer. i worked night clubs and upscale restaurants. i did arrest people and escorted employees when they went to the bank to deposit thousands of dollars. the security industry has gotten a bad rep for being a laid back industry full of incompetent wanna bee cops. the real truth is that many retired cops run and work in the security industry now because it is very lucrative if you know what you are doing and have the right clientele!

I work Full Time as a Licensed Security Officer in Tennessee, from what I have seen Guard is just another term for the profession.
It has nothing to do with Football or Firearms, at least not in Tennessee. At 21 you can be Licensed Armed Security Officer, whereas you have to be 18 to be unarmed.

A security guard IS the same thing as a security officer.
A security guard or security officer is a privately-employed person who is employed to protect property and/or people. Usually security guards are uniformed and act to protect property by maintaining a high visibility presence and observing (either directly, through patrols, or by watching alarm systems or video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and/or reporting any incidents to their client, employer and emergency services as appropriate.
