If you're talking about your son... your family... his future. This is not the time to rely on legal aid or some freebie lawyer (12 years of trial experience talking here). If you walked into a courtroom against a lawyer like I was, with one of these to defend you... Well, I'd cut your heart out and serve it to you on a platter. I'd pat myself on the back for a job well done while you and your son cried for each other. (This is why I quit trial law.)
This is crisis time; train wreck, do or die, HAVE TO WIN time. Reach out and touch your friends, your family, your church, whoever. Ask for an advance on your salary. Anything! Swallow your pride, humble your spirit. Get the cash you need to afford the best lawyer you can find. If you lose this first hearing, your chances are less than 10% that you will ever win. Ever.

sounds to me like your son is in the better place. If you're having a hard time getting cash now, what will happen if a emergency happens if you have custody? Going to rely on your Ex?
Think of his welfare first, get your act together, save the money and go after him whenYOU are situated yourself.
Later is better when you're satified with your life and the way it's going.

I apologize for your luck. There is sometimes help available through your local community action center or Legal aid does it sometimes. You can also try private lawyers who do pro bono cases.

Go to legal aid, they have a sliding scale. A job will be necessary for taking care of your child anyway, why don't you start now and save up.
