The Texas Instruments TI-30XIIS. I used it for all of my trig algebra and calc classes. It works awsome for trig functions, logs, fraction to decimal conversions, some probability, and exponential functions. It is only a 2 line calculator, so it won't graph. The best part is that you can get them for under $20 at most department stores.

I loved my TI 33, which I used all through middle school and high school, until it wore out last year. I'd had it for years, but they still make them. Its interface is a lot like a graphing calculator (with insert/delete, menus, and all that) but without all the bulk that comes with graphing functions. It sounds like about the level you're looking for, and it's fairly inexpensive.

If you do want graphing, go TI 83/84 or, if you're willing to shell out some extra cash and want every function you'll ever possibly need, a TI 90. I prefer the 84 myself, because I find it much more user-friendly. Since my college doesn't permit calculators on exams anyway, the extra functions wouldn't do me much good.

Which brings me to another piece of advice: see what's allowed on the test before you buy anything.

The TI-82, TI-83, etc.... they are what I used in college.
