I just received a couple of books as a gift that I'd like to keep for a while. I seem to remember once receiving a lesson on the appropriate way to open a hardcover book for the first time. As I recall, we are supposed to open the book a few pages at a time. However, I can't remember whether we started in the center or at the outside. Could you give me some advice?

I had to break in a church full of brand new hymnals once, years ago, and if I remember correctly, the preacher's wife told me that you start with the book standing in your hands, on it's spine, and then start at the front or back and take the hard cover and a few pages, gently open it up and run your hands gently up and down against the hardcover and few pages, and then take maybe twenty pages more, and open it up against what you have just separated or pressed open, and gently repeat that process of running your hands gently against the pages and hardcover you separated from the middle. Do this repeatedly until you get close to the middle of the book and then turn your focus to the remaining hard cover that's still standing upright in your hands, and take that hard cover and a few pages and gently rub your fingers against them as you open it up and repeat the same process you did on the first half of the book. You'll have a good book for decades to come. God Bless you.

Start from either end of the book and work towards the middle from both ends. You can do it for any kind of book - hardcover or paperback. And yes, do it a few pages at a time.

Read it. Get involved with the words. After a few pages, the stiffness seems to take itself away as you make the book your own by experiencing the words and feel of the binding. Then is truly will be YOUR book. Enjoy!

best to soak them for about a week then while there still wet hang em on a post in the sun for about a hour then when they are about 50% dry re soak them for 2 hours and this time put in 45mils of maple syrup just to add a little smell then if possible lay out above a steamer for 3 days then allow to dry in normal room temperature
