Sorry to disagree with the previous answer but the MOST important thing to control is pH. If it is not in range one of two things will happen: You will get no benefit from the chlorine you are using, or the water will burn your eyes out!!!! Get a quality test kit and learn to use it. Adjust total alkalinity and pH first. Then add chlorine shock. Tablets are used to constantly add chlorine, which is always dissipating. They dissolve slowly. Stabilizer (cyanuric acid) is more or less a one time application. Your pool store can test for it. You CANNOT do pool care on a calendar. Varying weather conditions, number of swimmers, rain, etc. all affect the chemistry in the pool. It only takes a few minutes a couple times a week to test and adjust. Time well spent. Otherwise you shall be playing "catch up" all the time.

Chlorine, shock, and Stabilizer/conditioner are the best and only chemicals you should use. Once the pool is filled put in 3 bags of shock and run the filter overnight. Put in 2 containers of stabilizer/conditioner the next day and run your filter for 48 hours without back washing. I personally like Pace chlorine tablets and always have 2 in the skimmer basket. If you see any algae in the pool increase to 3 tablets. I use 1 bag of shock sprinkled around the perimeter of the pool once a month, maybe 2 if it is very hot and muggy outside. After that every year when you open and fill your pool just chlorinate and add 1 container of stabilizer. Fooling around with PH up and down, algaecide, etc. will only screw up your water and cost you money! My father-in-law spent $150 on chemicals that turned his water brown! Use my method - guaranteed crystal clear water and happy swimming! Good Luck and enjoy the new pool.
