NO. nicotine does not make you selfish and stupid. Nicotine is addictive like coffee, chocolate etc. I use to smoke but when I wanted to get pregnant I stopped. I had some psychological withdrawals but there was nothing wrong with my brain. This was 28 years ago long before it all this blow up about second hand smoke. I educated myself about the harmful effects of coffee, cigarettes, alcohol and pregnancy.
I started smoking again when he was in school. I never smoked in the house or car where he was or would be, and again this was before all of the BIG deal of second hand smoke.
I quit again seven years later, because I wanted to. I just decided I should quit and I did. It was not easy to quit, it's like not reaching for that second plate of spaghetti or piece of chocolate cake. You decide you don't want to do it and you don't.
My son is now married and has his own home and I started smoking again. I have a Master's degree and graduated with 3.6. I smoke because I enjoy it. I exercise, eat balance a balance diet and do not consume alcohol. I am not overweight but I just enjoy smoking.
If I wanted to stop I would. Anyone that says they cannot are weak. They use that excuse as a crutch. I would guess that I am healthier than many non smokers and there is nothing wrong with my brain. I know smoking is not good for me just like being overweight, consuming too much coffee or alcohol etc.

Because smokers are addicts, and they will try to justify their addiction any way they can. My mother is the same way, and it drives me nuts. She'll light up when other people are eating, or if someone is having a bad asthma/allergy attack she'll light up as if the smoke isn't causing or contributing to it. She moved in with me for a while, and I wouldn't let her smoke in the house. She threw fits, and we almost got into a fist fight over it. Smokers need the hit, and it is worse than any other kind of drug because it is also a social and physical addiction as well as the drug addiction. Don't give in to her. Tell her that if she wants to see the grandkids, she can either go outside to light up or not smoke at all. She knows in her heart how harmful it is, but is trying to justify it. Studies show that nicotine is more addictive and harder to quit than cocaine and heroin. Drop for drop it's more lethal than strychnine and three times deadlier than arsenic.

Nicotine is a highly addictive drug, but I am sorry to say that your hubby's mum not only acted selfishly, she also acted irresponsibly too. I am sure that you know the effects passive smoking can have on people - and to do so when your son has asthma is downright insanity. You should have given her a slap! It would appear to me that her attitude was " I am going to smoke and to hell with you.' So in summary - yes smoking is highly addictive but this has nothing to do with your step mum being such an ****!!!

Yes. Tobacco is a drug to which people get addicted to. The need for nicotine is what drives them. If they don't get it, they get snappy & cranky - kind of like when a person stops drinking 2-3 cups of coffee everyday. It's basically a withdrawl.

first of all you are and was right to object about your mother inlaw smoking in your home ,firstly because of your sons health (asthma )and secondly because its your home, and your wishers , she should respect this. but it appears that she as no respect for you or your family , whilst smoking is a drug, its not as bad as being addicted drugs which are alot stronger then tobacco , next time she visits put you and your kids first ,and tell her smoking is banned in your home , but she its quite well come to smoke outside of your home .
