For windows based system>>>
XP- Start Menu>Programs>Accessories>Command Prompt
Now write (format c:) c is the name of the drive, replace with the letter of ur drive that u wan2 format.

Win 98- Start Menu>Programs>Command Prompt or Start ur computer in DOS mode and write the same command as XP

Remember formatting a drive will erase all data from it.

why do u want to format it....anyway...back up ur data in some other hard disk or memory ....now to format it u can do it thru numerous ways..but if u are trying to format the root drive i.e. the c:\ drive then u'll have to do this with the help of a start up disk...create a startup disk fromthe control panel (in case of 98 or millenium) or just insert a floppy and right click on the icon and create one in case of xp....now after u have created up the disk...insert it inside and in the bios choose the floppy as the first boot device....this will boot ur comp....there it will enlist all the drives present in ur comp...if u want to erase all the drive then use the fdisk command or utility...if u just want to format it.... then simply use the line format (disk name e.g. c: ) without the backslash (\) this will format ur drive and u'll lose all data...u can also format the disk with the help of an OS cd if u have one...
then u'll need to reinstall the os...
all the best..

Formatting your computer causes the hard drive to be totally and utterly erased of all information. This includes the operating system and all other files. Don't do it unless you know what you're doing..

best way is to either go through the windows CD or a boot dick, the cd will walk you through it. if you get a boot disk you want to go ahead and get directions on how to use it. you can also just use the command promt, but you cant use the windows command prompt. Formatting will wipe everything, so you better have some kind of windows CD.

The process is to go to a command prompt (start/run/cmd) and type in "fdisk c:"
It will totally wipe your hard drive beyond recovery. You'll lose everything you don't back up on another drive first. I agree. Don't do it if you don't know what you're doing.

If you format your hard drive, then you will lose everything.
You will have to start over by installing Windows and all of your applications. You will lose all of your saved data.

Reformatting will loose all data. The process is different with each OS. I'm assuming you have a PC. Macs are very different.
