This is purely a theoretical question. Consider the existing oligarchy in the Peoples Republic of China, the oligarchies of the wealthy in various Latin American and African countries, as well as the potential future(?) oligarchy of corporations in the USA and beyond.

No. In order for a oligarchy system of government to be truly successful, you must have the unquestioning loyalty of government institutions, including the press.

A free press, by definition, is a questioning body. Questions are unhealthy for an oligarchy. Blind obedience is better.

We are never truly free so long as a government exists to enforce the laws agreed upon by a majority of society, however, so long as the minority at least has the right to be heard there is some level of freedom. When that minority is quelched and unheard (like those calling those opposed to the Iraq war unpatriotic) than we're in deep dodo.

You dont even need to look that far afield to see this.
Just turn on the evening news then try to catch something that is under spin control here and then check out the CBC or some other world news.
You will be shocked.

No tyrannical government call allow free press or free speech and expect its monopoly on power and force to continue unabated. No free speech, no guns, no liberty -- and things don't necessarily disappear in that order.
