When I put a larger number in the maximum size box I get an error notification saying,( it needs to be in a paging file size.I admit I just make up a number, but what else can I do. Oh ,by the way, I just installed a new 80 gb HD and a modem.

It's never a good idea to just put a number in if you don't know what you're doing. Review these links - then set your page file.

Virtual Memory - Harddrive - Pagefile.sys
Physical Memory - RAM - random access memory

I recommend defragmenting

just put in allowed amount i also usually add about 10 percent more than recommended and ive never had a problem. make sure if you have more than one drive you config the primary drive to your memory
