The lunar module is the only true space craft. All other crafts must do dual duty on earth and in space. It was flown in a standing position.

The top part of the module was designed to be crashed into the moon after delivering the two astronauts back to the command module, to create moon 'quakes' for seismic experiments deployed on the lunar surface.

The lunar module had a very thin skin, about the thickness of aluminum foil, because for one reason it was never going to re-enter the earth's atmosphere and it naturally was alot lighter to put into space.
