Someone I know says, "Wuzzamuhcuzzuhmuh?"
I say, "I'm sorry, I understand the distributive property when applied to this problem, but I often mistake the variable for a multiplication symbol."

I like "pardon" but I like to say it with a southern accent like Doc Holiday (Val Kilmer) did on "Tombstone"

Repeat with what you thought you hear the person say (maybe exagerrating a little)
EX. "Do you know what time the locker cleanout is?"
"Do I know what rhymes with soccer bean bag less???"
and they'll say "No! I said, do you know what time the locker cleanout is!"
and you say "Oohhh! nope, sorry".

other ways:

2) "have you lost it?"
3) "....ok...."
4) "i think you are in over your head"
