Do you grow dope?
Not being funny but an £800 ($1600) electric bill should raise few red flags with the police.
That sort of usage in a small house is usually a sign of some one growing large amounts of Cannabis.
I would not be surprised if they are watching you.
I would get that sorted out quickly
I mean I live in a 3 bed house with 4 teenage kids who leave everything on all the time and the washer & dryer seem to run all the time I think our biggest bill was £55 that said we have 3 TV's and I have a heated green house and a fair few power tools.
Do0d your being robbed

Wow. OK, here are several ideas, in no particular order:
1. Look at the bill: against the reading, does it show E for estimate? If so, check the actual reading on your meter.
2. What does the bill show for the previous reading?
3. This might be an advance bill for the whole year coming.
4. If you have any old bills, see if they are showing any payments you have made (they should). If not, they may be saying you still owe them for last year.
5. If you still can't get through by phone, check the bill to see if there is another phone number, an email address or even a fax number.
6. There should be the contact details for the electricity ombudsman on the bill. Contact him - that is exactly what he is there for. You will need all your details when you speak to him, so have all your bills ready.
7. Failing the ombudsman, the Citizen's Advice Bureau will help - that's what they're there for.
8. Check that the meter is working properly - if the dials are whizzing around, there's something wrong.
9. Check that there is nothing on that shouldn't be on. If you had some heater on the whole time that you didn't know about (say, down in the basement), that might bump up your bill.
10. The press love stories about the poor victim of greedy/incompetent companies. They often have consumer help pages which may take up your case and get it dealt with properly.
Good luck!

Well, as far as billing issues you should be able to talk to a person with minimal persistence. If they give you a real hard time tell them you think your meter is broken or someone may have tapped into your electricity and is stealing it. If it comes down to it file a police report for stolen electricity and refuse to pay until your house is inspected. Where I live 800 pounds would by about 20,000KW hours of electricity, which is a huge huge amount for any residence, let alone a small house.

I was a plumber working in an old persons house and she had an enormous electric bill, even though she didnt use much. I called in an electrician and he found that there was defective wiring under the kitchen floor and was leaking to earth. I should have known there was a fault as the kitchen tiles were always warm.

when you phone and you get the automated answering press one for etc press 00 and you should be put through to an operator.
see how fast the meter wheel is turning if very fast turn off your mains switch and it should stop.try taking meter readings at short intervals. switch everything off in the house at it's outlet and see if the meter is still turning if it is still turning you have missed something or you have an extra connection or serious leak . is your water in your hot tap literally boiling and have you got an immersion heater if so your thermostat is faulty
this could cost a lot. the meter reading could be wrong just a transposed numbers etc

How long is it for? How long have you lived there? Do you use many electric appliances? Gotta think about these things when you speak to them, just explain the situation and see if they can come to some arrangement with paying them back.

Is it your first ever reading? if so youve been stitched up by whoever used to live there, if not ring, ring and ring because they will try and take you to court.
