I hope this is a trick question, they at least used to be all over the place, yahoo, ircq, way to many to list but back when I was playing with them yahoo was the best because they would allow voice chat and video chat too, surely they did not all go pay per use, I would not pay for it at least, just look around on the search engines and find one you like. Just remember that one of the easiest ways to get a virus is to except a file transfer through one of them, so if you do, make sure you know the person in real life before doing so

Two of the websites I know of with free chat is Yahoo! and AOL instant messenger. There used to be mIRC and ICQ (ICQ.com).
