I have been spotting/ bleeding for about a month 1/2 or so. 10 days ago I saw my gyn and she put me on Provera to stop the bleeding. and she said I pretty much have to keep on taking it to keep my cycle regular. Still spotting, but not as bad, supposed to start my cycle again in 3 days. Is this normal? and Can you still get pg on Provera.

My wife was on Depo Provera for About seven years. I assume that's the same as Provera.

Her periods completely stopped. For about six of those years she never had a period. Without a period, it's just about impossible to get pregnant because you aren't ovulating. And it seemed like heaven to her, being completely rid of her period.

However, nothing is 100% effective, and you might still ovulate occasionally and so you may still have fertile times. And you may not know it until too late. So don't rely too heavily on it.

The problem came when she stopped taking the Depo. Apparently, seven years is far longer than you are supposed to be on it, and none of her doctors could tell her what the effect of stopping would be. Well, it was quite an effect. She started a heavy period that lasted, non stop, for almost a year. It was horrible for her, and I felt so bad for her.

After a year, it finally stopped. We thought it was over. But then she missed about three months in a row without being pregnant and then started bleeding again for six more months.

Eventually, after about three more years, everything balanced out.

But my point is this: Be aware of the possible side effects of this or any other drug you take, and don't take this or any other drug longer than the suggested time frame. When my wife was on it, there was no real suggested time frame.

(Addendum: The post immediately above mine was added while I was typing mine. The information about the class actiuon lawsuit has me VERY concerned. My wife has never had a reason to have a bone mineral density test before, but I think I'll be asking her to get one now. This is a very good example of needing to be very aware of side effects. Holy cow! Thank you for the info, Frester.)

It is normal to have the spotting on provera in between cycles, after being on it longer this may disappear. Like any other birth control method, except abstinence, this is still a possibility of pregnancy but the likelihood is very small. If you are concerned, you could still use spermicide, foam, or condoms or a combination for more security.

I was on depo provera for 8 years. And well.. get off the shot now! the odds of getting pregnant are slim, but the odds of getting other major health issues are very high.

The big one is low bone density. Do a search in google for depo provera.

or even look at the link below
the second link is to a lawyers page with a major lawsuit going on against depo.

Im serious., If you are taking it now, get off of it. It's not worth the risks.

(your welcome Wayne. And do some more research online. you will find lots of info on it. I hope your wife doesn't get the issues I have gotten - including permanent tremor in most of my body parts. It also caused early onset menopause. I am 43 but tests prove that I am post menopausal. You can email me by clicking on my nickname)

Provera and depo provera are still the same drug (same base -same reactions. just taken differently. )
