No, we've come a long way since the games in the Coliseum and we really should be happy about that advancement in society.

Yes, I think that when people have to wear those sandwich signs that tell of their crime, it is fitting. Shame should be part of the judicial system more often. That is 50% of the consequence of a careless action, in my opinion. I only believe some executions should be public, such as if the person is guilty of doing the same thing, i.e., killing someone while taping it, and posting it on the Internet, so that would mean mostly terrorists. Zarqawi should have got that.

the only punishment that is public is road gangs in chains and workers wearing the jail outfits cleaning up the roads and higways. punishment in public was abolished at the turn of the 1900's. the mob did a good job of it until the 60's. it was considered to cruel for children to see and was ruled as cruel punishment.

It sure would cut down on crime. It would also make the government feel even more powerful than it already is. Get too big for it's breetches. Ok, so it is either the criminals that get too big for their breetches or the government gets too big for theirs. I just don't know, I am leaning toward the criminals being knocked a few notches. I will have to ponder over this some more.

Shades of Puritans and the Wild west!!!We've been there, done that and got the shirt to prove it. Public punishment today is in the news. Everybody all over the world knows what you've done.

I assume you mean "public executions" of prisoners? Well since the American leftist can't even decide that injecting a condemned prisoner with lethal drugs that make him \ her go to sleep I don't think it would be effective. I don't think it would help for the public too see a condemened prisoner fall asleep on a gurney - do you?

Many crimes effect whole communities. We would like to think that crimes are isolated incidents and effect only the victim and he perpetrator, this isn't the case. In a situation that greatly impacts a community I believe that the criminal should have to face his/her punishment in the face of the people they have effected.

Yes! Most definately! For example, I would like to see all sex offenders listed periodically in the newspaper, with details of their crimes. Also, they should have to put large signs in their front yards telling people that they are sex offenders. One thing I would really like that I doubt is ever going to happen would be to 'brand' offenders, by tattooing 'sex offender' on their foreheads, but I doubt it.

It is more barbaric than the crime committed out of insane behavior or a crime of passion or rage.
