Watching this year's WC, I've had a burning desire to go to the next FIFA WC in South Africa in 2010. When will tickets be available, and how early should I start making preparations? Also, what are the estimated costs about, for tickets and for travel expenses?

I've been to two Wolrd Cup Finals ('94 and '02) so, as far as tickets, they usually sell them through FIFA's site from Feb. the year before. You won't know which teams are playing where but we were able to get all matches in Miyagi that way and later on at further selling points throughout the year snagged tix. It's also fairly easy to buy off scalpers and this whole "name printed on the ticket" is not checked at all.

I was not checked once in Japan or Korea in '02 and a good friend of mine in Germany right now said he bought a tix for swiss-Korea off a scalper at face value and got in. Of course, it had another person's name on it.

If you are serious about going, e-mail me and I can tell you much more.

you need to start way in advance at least a 1.5 years...and in all honesty getting tickets is like winning the lottery, well almost.

sooo..a rough sketch:

If your country doesnt qualify or if you are not a host country citizen or work for a large mulitnational with the opportunity to get tickets you almost might as well not bother. If your country qualifies approach the ruling football association (FA) in your country to be put on a waiting list (each FA of qualifying countries get allocated tickets, and then only to games of that particular FA - if your team progresses then you can carry on to the later rounds as well - depending on what package you want - there are often alot of restrictions). If you are American - I guess you shouldn't have any problems qualifying since they don't really play any real teams except Mexico...

Good luck, count me in too! - I am glad to hear that have like what you have seen so much that would like to go next WC... why didn't you think this earlier (previous world cups etc.)???

A football lover - since age 1 year old ... (I have photographic evidence)

LOL... your question made me giggle !!! The best advice I can give you is to approach a MAJOR travel agency and let them know that you want information AS SOON AS they start dealing with trips to the world cup -- tickets, hotels, flights, they will deal with all that for you. They'll put your name and address in their computer and contact you when they start dealing with it. Now imagine South Africa... and how hot it will be there during that World Cup !! Take lots of "factor 70" sun cream, LOL !! I think the qualifying matches for 2010 start at the end of 2006, LOL !! The first match for England will be the country of Swaziland and for Portugal the Antartica --- the initial matches are so comical !!!

you can book a flight a year in advance to save some money, or find a courier service that can send you to Africa.
After that the tickets to go to the matches are about $200 I think, but by the time the game arrives they go up to $700, and if it's going to be two really good teams it can go up to $1000.

So basically I would just go to watch the games in a pub, where it's free.

Start saving now. Plan your trip about 8 months before, and book your seats when about 6 months before.
